Meet Laura Kirby. Ms. Kirby always has a smile on her face and she always brings joy to those around her. She has lived in Hall County all her life and has been a math teacher for 22 years.  Ms. Kirby has three children, two have graduated from North Hall and one is still attending North Hall. Something on her bucket list is to travel to all the National Parks in the U.S. Some of her favorite restaurants in our community are Atlas pizza and Longstreet Cafe.

Q: Tell us about yourself.

A: “This is my 22nd year teaching math. I have 3 kids, two graduated from North Hall and one is still attending North Hall. And I grew up in hall county. “

 

Q: If you graduated from North Hall, what year did you graduate?

A: “I didn’t graduate from North Hall, I graduated from West Hall in 1996, which means I’m old. “

 

Q: Are you involved in anything at North Hall?

A: “ I’m involved in teaching and have also been the leader for the NG3 cross country girl’s group. And I meet with the girls weekly, every Monday to help them with character and to bring change into the community and their generation.”

 

Q: What is your favorite sport or activity to attend at North Hall?

A: “I can’t pick because I love all sports. Softball, football, when it’s basketball season I love basketball, baseball, and volleyball even though I don’t know much about volleyball. I love all sports so I could not just pick one. I always loved drama, I always go watch the plays that my students are in.”

 

Q: What’s your favorite thing about North Hall?

A: “My favorite thing is North Hall is so positive, just the school in general, our administration, fellow teachers I just feel like it’s a very positive environment.”

 

Q: What is your favorite tradition at North Hall?

A: “Favorite tradition I think would be homecoming week, I just love the parade and going back to old traditions like the pep rally and just everything that surrounds homecoming week.” 

 

Q: Who is your mentor or role model that inspires you to be better? 

A: “My biggest mentor would be Jesus from the Bible, but for a person, I think our math department because all the teachers are role models and are all trying to be better. The department inspires me to try new things, be better and always improve our instructions.”

 

Q: What do you like most about teaching math? 

A: “It’s helping kids, kids have to learn math, you can’t graduate without learning math, and I love being that bridge to help them do something that they’re going to have to do. And I always say you don’t have to love it, you just have to get through it. And why not get through it with the best attitude.”

 

Q: Tell us about your family?

A: “I have 3 kids, Greyson is a 2nd-year student at UGA, hopefully going to graduate in a year and a half. Kensley is in her 1st year at Liberty University, and Breckan is a Junior here at North Hall. I have one sister who lives in Agusta. “

 

Q: Did you have any family members that attended North Hall?

A: “Only two cousins.”

 

Q: What are some of your hobbies and interests?

A: “I love being outside, I used to be a really great runner. Now I am a very average runner. I love to hike and be outside. I love to watch sports, love to shop, and I also like music.” 

 

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world where would it be?

A: “Hawaii because it’s on my bucket list.”

 

Q: What advice would you like to give or leave with people?

A: “Live in the now because we aren’t promised anything, we aren’t promised next week, or next month or even next year. And to be present at the moment.”

 

Q: One thing/place in our community makes you the most nostalgic?

A: “Probably the square, I just love all the events.”

 

Q: What is something you have been proud to check off your bucket list?

A: “I’ve run a marathon twice.”

 

Q: What is your go-to band you listen to when you don’t know what to listen to?

A: “I don’t have a band, it would be a station, ‘Air1’ which is basically worship music.”

 

Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?

A: “A tropical vacation”

 

Q: Who inspires you to be better?

A: “I think of my kids because I want to be the best version of myself for them.”
